What is this study about?
Genital self-image is a central construct of sexual health: as previous research has shown, it is related to sexual satisfaction, sexual function, protection against sexually transmitted diseases, and the use of preventive examinations.
The project follows up on Ellen Laan and colleagues' 2017 paper in the Journal of Psychosomatic Obstetrics & Gynecology, which demonstrated a positive effect of viewing images of natural vulvas on female college students' genital self-perception.
An online experiment was used to examine whether and how persistently women's and men's genital self-perceptions changed as a result of viewing images of natural genitalia and learning about the function of sex. To do so, participants were randomly assigned to an intervention or control condition and surveyed about their genital self-image and sexual health before and two weeks and two months after exposure to the stimulus material.
How can I participate?
The experiment was completed.
